6 tips to choosing the perfect his and hers wedding rings

In the excitement of getting engaged and starting to plan the big day, choosing your wedding rings can sometimes be a bit of an afterthought. But given you’ll be wearing your wedding ring every day for the rest of your life, you shouldn’t rush into picking the first one you see.

We look at 6 tips to help you pick the perfect his and hers wedding rings.

1. Set your wedding ring budget

When you set your overall wedding budget, don’t forget to include your wedding rings. As they will be worn every day for the rest of your life, it’s nice to set aside a little bit more than you would spend on normal jewellery.

Setting the budget will also help you narrow down your wedding ring choices. A wedding band set with diamonds will be more expensive than a plain wedding band and a platinum band more expensive than a white gold one.

2. Start wedding ring shopping early

Give yourself plenty of time. You’ll be amazed at the wide variety of different options available, so give yourself time to research, try on and even revisit rings you like.

And if your heart is set on a bespoke ring, give yourself even longer. We’ll be happy to talk through your ideas  and will always work to meet your preferred deadline.

3. Decide on the shape and size to suit your lifestyle

You’ll be wearing your wedding ring every day, so it’s important to choose something that fits with your lifestyle. So, if you work with your hands you might want to avoid gemstones that could come lose, or if you’re super active, a slimmer ring with rounded edges would make more sense.

We have samples of all the different shapes available, so you can see how they look and feel on your finger.

4. Get a wedding band that fits with your engagement ring

If possible, it’s best to choose your engagement ring and wedding band at the same time, so you know they fit together. But if you haven’t done that, it’s not the end of the world.

Always make sure you wear your engagement ring when you go shopping, so you can try on different wedding ring shapes to see how they fit together. Also, have a think about how often you plan to wear your engagement ring. If you plan on wearing it all the time, then a simple wedding band might be better, so it doesn’t steal the limelight from your engagement ring. But if you’re planning on wearing your wedding band alone, you might fancy going for something a bit more sparkly.

5. Choose the metal to reflect your individual style

Your wedding bands don’t need to match, so if you like yellow gold and your partner doesn’t, it really doesn’t matter.  What is important is that you select something the reflects your own individual style. If you are intent on having matching rings, consider braided bands which use two or three different metals.

We carry a large selection of samples of both braided and single metal wedding bands, so why not come and visit us in Amersham Old Town and find something you are both happy with.

6. Shop together

Although traditionally the bride buys her groom’s wedding ring and vice versa, we always suggest that you go wedding ring shopping together. It doesn’t mean you have to wear matching rings, but there is something undeniably romantic about choosing this symbol of love together.

A wedding ring is going to be with you long after your wedding day is over, so take the time to get it right. And don’t forget there are a number of ways you can personalise your wedding rings. You could use a piece of jewellery that’s been passed down your family as the basis for your rings or you could have them engraved with a special message.
